How-To: Cowhide Rugs

Cowhide rugs are a decorating staple. I’ve been analyzing them more closely than ever lately because I may or may not be looking at one for a project that I’m working on… hint, hint.

There’s nothing like a hide to bring texture and interest in to a room, and the vast array of colours and patterns available means that regardless of the style and colour palette of a room, there will always be a cowhide that will work. Not sure how to use one of these guys in your own home? Read on and you’ll be a pro in no time!

My fave colours of the moment are brindle and tan because of how light and neutral they can be. White is a good option too. These are perfect if you’re a bit décor shy or unsure of how a cowhide will look in your space. These colours are soft looking and work well with light interiors based around creams, greys, and whites. We'll consider these three our intro level cows:

Cute, right?!? Now, to see how they work in a room and the type of space that they look the best in, I've compiled some drool-worthy inspiration. Get ready to say 'Aaaahhh'.

Gorgeous, right? I adore the softness and freshness of each of these photos.

Now, if you're still easing in to this and the tones in your home are predominantly medium or dark, you’ll want to go for a solid, not patterned, hide, but in a dark colour. Solid black is really easy to find, as is black with a bit of dark brown. These will be the sleekest looking and will definitely fit in with a more modern space, a masculine décor style, or interiors that with dark brown and black finishes.

A bit more drama but still blending nicely, these dark hides look great in these spaces.

Now, what about those of you that aren't shy and want your cool rug to be a focal point? Look at you go, you decorating wizard, you! To that I say, go for something snazzy! Spotted or freckled patterns, black and white, brown and white, tri-colours, or whatever else you happen to find are all perfect. There’s something cute and quirky about adding a hide with variation and character! Check out these funky options:

Each of these spaces are oozing with personality and their rug selections reflect that perfectly. I love the freckles!

So now that you've had cowhide 101, which option would you go for? I think a lot of our readers will be bold and funky, but there's nothing wrong with a preference for a 'tall, dark and handsome' hide or a gorgeous lighter number. Personally, I'd love one of every colour but the true test will be when I make the final selection. I'll keep you posted!
